Bantengan Traditional Art



Cultural diversity in Java, especially East Java has enriched traditional arts of the region. One of them Bantengan art. This folk art comes from a village which used to be a village adjacent to the slopes of Mount Welirang. It is believed many of the forest areas in this mount life a variety of wild animals including bull which is now extinct. At that time, a villager called Made Paimin got into the forest and found a piece of framework which was similar to a bull. Made Paimin was a martial art trainer, so his martial art style was influenced by bull as the symbol of strength.

Since then, the martial art performance in this area has been influenced by bull. Indigenous people then perform the martial art attraction by wearing bull costume. Bantengan attraction is played by two men, one man plays the head and the other one plays the hip. The attraction describes the movement and attitude of furious bull while fighting. To enliven the attraction, traditional musical background is played. Besides music, the bull is usually accompanied by other wild animals like tigers and lions.
